Chennai, June 14 (NationPress) Former Tamil Nadu minister and Thirumangalam MLA R.B. Udhayakumar (AIADMK) was taken into custody along with a group of supporters following a tense confrontation with police near the V Sathirapatti police station in Peraiyur taluk, Madurai district.
Tensions escalated when law enforcement conducted a search operation at the residence of a man named Prabhakaran, who is implicated in a murder case.
Although Prabhakaran was not home during the search, his father was taken to the V. Sathirapatti station for questioning, according to police sources.
Furious about this development, Prabhakaran, allegedly under the influence of alcohol and accompanied by an associate, entered the police station later that night.
The pair threatened a police officer, vandalized police property, and subsequently fled the scene.
This sudden aggression prompted increased security measures around the station.
Upon learning of the events, Udhayakumar sought to visit the police station to understand the situation better.
However, he was stopped by police at Muthulingapuram and denied entry, reportedly as a precaution to prevent further escalation.
In defiance, Udhayakumar staged a protest on-site, demanding access to the police station.
He was joined by a crowd of AIADMK workers and supporters who raised slogans against the police's actions.
As the protest disrupted public order and the group refused to disperse despite repeated warnings, police moved to arrest Udhayakumar and several of his supporters.
AIADMK sources claimed the police acted excessively and overstepped their authority. In contrast, law enforcement maintained that these arrests were essential to uphold law and order.
The atmosphere in the area remains tense, although additional security personnel have been deployed to avert further unrest. Senior police officials are anticipated to hold a press briefing shortly.
This incident is poised to ignite political discussions, with opposition parties likely to scrutinize the police’s handling of the situation, particularly concerning the arrest of a sitting MLA.
