New Delhi, Oct 31 (NationPress) Recognizing the strengthening of ties between India and the United Kingdom, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar remarked on Friday that the relationship has transitioned from a complex historical association to a dynamically forward-looking partnership. He emphasized that the last year has been an exceptional year for the modern relationship between the two nations.
The British High Commission in India celebrated King Charles' Birthday Party in New Delhi. This festive occasion, honoring King Charles III as the UK’s Head of State, follows a pivotal year in UK-India relations, marked by a finalized Free Trade Agreement (FTA), a mutual vision for 2035, and reciprocal visits from PM Modi and PM Starmer.
“Over the years, our relationship has evolved from a complex historical association to a dynamic and forward-looking partnership. This past year has indeed been remarkable for our modern relationship. Earlier this month, as the High Commissioner noted, we welcomed Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Mumbai, joined by the largest-ever trade delegation from the UK. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the UK three months prior, and I had the honor of accompanying him when we signed the historic Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement. During this visit, we also adopted Vision 2035, aimed at guiding our relations across five pillars: Growth, Technology and Innovation, Defence and Security, Climate and Clean Energy, and Education. Additionally, we established a Defence Industrial Roadmap for the first time,” EAM Jaishankar highlighted during the UK National Day celebrations.
Highlighting the strengthened collaboration, EAM Jaishankar noted that India and the UK have enhanced cooperation in various sectors, including the Technology Security Initiative, connectivity, AI, and critical minerals.
“A significant milestone is that nine prominent UK universities have received approval to set up campuses in India. Southampton University has already opened its campus in Gurugram and welcomed its first batch of students. Today is also an opportunity to appreciate the vital role of the 1.9 million-strong Indian diaspora in the UK. They are a ‘living bridge’, fostering a unique bond between our nations,” he added.
He also remarked that King Charles' dedication to sustainability aligns closely with PM Modi's Mission LiFE vision. EAM Jaishankar recalled that PM Modi presented a sapling to King Charles during his visit to Sandringham Castle in July. In return, King Charles gifted a sapling to PM Modi on his birthday as part of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative—a gesture that symbolizes the shared commitment of both nations to protect the planet for future generations.
In closing, EAM Jaishankar offered his best wishes to King Charles on this special occasion, stating, “May the friendship between India and the United Kingdom continue to flourish in the years ahead!”
