'59-Minute Mumbai' goal in sight as Fadnavis inaugurates 3 key flyovers
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday, 22 October 2026, declared that the rapid pace of infrastructure development across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is bringing the state's ambitious '59-Minute Mumbai' vision within concrete reach. Speaking at the virtual inauguration of three strategically critical infrastructure projects executed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Fadnavis said multi-modal connectivity upgrades will meaningfully improve the 'Ease of Living' for millions of Mumbaikars.
Three Projects Inaugurated
The Chief Minister virtually inaugurated the Railway Overbridge connecting Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Marg and Ramchandra Chemburkar (RC) Marg at Vidyavihar Railway Station (N Ward), the reconstructed Sion Railway Overbridge, and the flyover stretching from Ratnagiri Hotel Junction to Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari (Film City) in Goregaon East under the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project. Fadnavis described all three as part of a concerted push to establish seamless north-south and east-west corridors across the metropolis.
Key Connectivity Gains for Commuters
The Vidyavihar flyover connects RC Marg on the east with LBS Marg on the west, cutting cross-track travel time from 30 minutes to just 10 minutes. It is also expected to ease pressure on the heavily congested flyover near Ghatkopar station.
The Goregaon (GMLR) flyover targets chronic traffic bottlenecks at Ratnagiri Hotel Junction and its surrounding intersections, while facilitating smoother east-west movement and improving access toward the proposed twin underground tunnels beneath Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
Perhaps the most historically significant of the three is the rebuilt Sion Railway Overbridge — a replacement for a 112-year-old unsafe structure. The new bridge restores a vital east-west link and, critically, creates the vertical clearance required for Central Railway's 5th and 6th rail lines. Once those tracks are operational, they will enable an increase in the frequency and total number of local train services, benefiting lakhs of daily commuters.
What the Sion Bridge Connects
Fadnavis noted that the new Sion bridge serves as a pivotal link between Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road and the Eastern Express Highway on one side, and western corridors including Dharavi, Bandra, and the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) on the other. This makes it a load-bearing artery in Mumbai's broader east-west grid, which has historically suffered from under-capacity crossings.
Government Coordination and What Comes Next
Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar commended the coordination between the BMC, the State Government, and the Union Government that enabled the projects to reach completion on schedule. She congratulated the municipal administration, engineers, contractors, and workers for their timely execution.
This comes amid a broader infrastructure acceleration in the MMR, which also includes the Mumbai Metro expansions and the coastal road project. The '59-Minute Mumbai' vision — targeting near-seamless intra-city travel within the hour — has become a key political benchmark for the Fadnavis administration. How quickly the Central Railway lines and the GMLR tunnels materialise will be the real test of whether the vision translates into lived experience for commuters.
