Kolkata, July 3 (NationPress) The relatives of 13-year-old Tamanna Khatun, who tragically lost her life in a bomb explosion last month in Kaliganj, Nadia district, West Bengal, are set to approach the Calcutta High Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the incident.
The victim's mother stated on Thursday that they will be legally represented by senior advocate and CPI(M) Rajya Sabha member Bikas Ranjan Bhattacharya in this pursuit of justice.
“The ongoing investigation by state police is merely a facade. Many of the individuals named as suspects are still at large. Under these circumstances, we are convinced that neither we nor our late daughter will receive justice if the state police continue to handle the inquiry. Therefore, we have chosen to petition the Calcutta High Court for a CBI investigation,” the victim’s mother expressed.
The victim's father also shared that they initially placed their trust in the state police's investigation. “However, we now demand a CBI probe. All we seek is justice for our daughter,” he stated.
Currently, there have been nine arrests in connection with the case, while 15 others, linked to the ruling Trinamool Congress and mentioned in the complaint filed by the victim's mother, remain unaccounted for.
Tamanna Khatun was reportedly killed by shrapnel from a bomb thrown during a victory procession celebrating the success of Trinamool Congress candidate Alifa Ahmed in the Kaliganj by-elections, the results of which were announced on June 23.
The victim's mother accused district police officials of overlooking the political motivations behind the bombing incident directed towards their home, which resulted in her daughter’s death.
According to her, their residence was specifically targeted due to the family’s long-standing ideological alignment with and involvement in the CPI(M).
Previously, the National Commission for Women (NCW) took notice of the incident and requested clarification from Amarnath K., the Superintendent of Police for Krishnanagar District, under whose jurisdiction Kaliganj falls.
