FIR Filed Against TMC-Linked BLO Member Over Protest at CEO Office
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 6 (NationPress) The police in Kolkata have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against a woman associated with the Trinamool Congress-backed BLO Rights Protection Committee for conducting a protest outside the State Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office, as confirmed by officials on Monday.
A senior officer from the Kolkata Police has verified that a notice has been issued to Booth Level Officer (BLO) Tanushree Modak Bhattacharya, instructing her to report to the Hare Street police station within three days of receipt. This FIR is believed to have been lodged following directives from the Election Commission of India.
The notice mandates Bhattacharya to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation and to furnish all required documents. She has also been cautioned against participating in similar protests in the future, tampering with evidence, or hindering the investigation. The notice warns that non-compliance could lead to her arrest.
This incident arises amidst ongoing protests by certain BLOs who are aligned with the Trinamool Congress, having expressed their grievances since the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process commenced in West Bengal in early November of the previous year.
The BLO Rights Protection Committee had organized a sit-in outside the CEO's office, claiming that the workload was excessive and that many BLOs had resorted to drastic measures due to the mounting pressure.
Officials have stated that this is the first recorded instance of an FIR being lodged against a female BLO concerning protests at the CEO's office.
Earlier, tensions escalated on February 24 during a similar demonstration, when Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari visited the CEO's office and shouted slogans. This situation intensified as supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) converged on the area, resulting in unrest.
In the aftermath of that event, Bhattacharya filed a complaint against BJP supporters for alleged misconduct. However, the current FIR has been filed against her in relation to the protest gathering, as per the Election Commission's directives.
