Kolkata, April 21 (NationPress) On Monday morning, a tragic fire engulfed a commercial building complex located on Pathuriaghata Street in North Kolkata, West Bengal, resulting in the deaths of two individuals.

The deceased have been identified as Kishanlal Upadhyay and Sunil Sharma, both of whom worked as contractual priests. Authorities are currently attempting to reach out to their family members.

The inferno reportedly began late Sunday night. Firefighters deployed ten fire tenders, and after extensive efforts, they successfully subdued the flames by early Monday morning.

Upon investigation, firemen discovered Upadhyay and Sharma unconscious in the attic of the commercial building where they lived. They were swiftly transported to Calcutta Medical College & Hospital in central Kolkata.

Unfortunately, both were pronounced dead shortly after arrival. According to sources from the state fire services, it is likely that their deaths were caused by suffocation due to smoke inhalation from the fire.

The precise cause of the fire remains unknown, although state fire services officials suspect it may have been caused by a short circuit. “The fire originated in a garment warehouse within the building, where highly flammable materials were stored, allowing the fire to spread rapidly,” stated a fire services department representative at the scene.

Firefighters encountered initial obstacles reaching the front of the building due to the narrow approach. “After the fire erupted, residents attempted to escape to the roof. Unfortunately, the rooftop access was locked, hindering their escape. We managed to evacuate everyone, including the two individuals who later lost their lives,” the official added.

Officials from the fire department have raised concerns regarding potential lapses in fire safety compliance within the building. “All these factors are currently under investigation,” the official commented. As of the time this report was filed, there had been no official statement from state fire services minister Sujit Bose.
