What Happened at the Luxury Residential Building in Tollygunge?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 15 (NationPress) A blaze erupted in a luxurious residence located in the Tollygunge area of south Kolkata on Sunday afternoon, prompting several prominent figures from the Bengal film industry, who reside there, to evacuate to the street below.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported during this incident, which enveloped the multi-storey building in thick black smoke.
The fire ignited in Tower 2 of Diamond City Residence, where various celebrities, including the film couple Yash and Nusrat, as well as actress and Trinamool Congress MLA Sayantika Banerjee, own apartments.
Reports indicate that Yash and Nusrat hurried down with their children in distress. All residents were safely evacuated.
Four fire engines were dispatched following the emergency call.
Initial reports suggest that the fire began on the fifth floor, but no occupants were present in the room where it originated. Early assessments point to a short circuit as the likely cause. The police and fire brigade arrived promptly and managed to control the situation.
While no injuries occurred, there are significant concerns regarding potential property damage. If the fire had not been contained swiftly, it could have escalated into a more serious incident.
This event has incited alarm among local residents.
When reached for comment, Banerjee stated: "I learned about the fire at the residential building. However, I was not there at the time. I have arrived at the camp in Baranagar. I am safe."
Director Shubhrajit Mitra, a resident of the building, recounted the incident in detail.
"I heard that a Shivaratri puja was taking place in the temple of a resident on the fifth floor. They lit a lamp and performed aarti, leaving without extinguishing it, intending to conduct the Shiva puja in the residence's temple. In their absence, the fire likely ignited from the unattended lamp in the house," he explained.
"I reside on the 18th floor and my mother is unwell at home. It took me a while to navigate down with her since the lift was out of service. During that time, I saw other residents fleeing down the stairs," Mitra added.
The flat belonging to actor couple Yash and Nusrat is situated one floor above where the fire started. Fearing for their safety, they swiftly brought down their two children.
Just two days prior, another fire incident occurred at the Globcine Crystal Building in Salt Lake Sector Five, where a female employee of a multinational company fell ill due to smoke inhalation and was subsequently rescued and taken to a hospital.
