Upon her arrival in Karur, accompanied by Union Ministers L. Murugan and Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran, Sitharaman began her visit by assessing the site at Velayuthampalayam, where the calamity occurred.
She engaged with local officials and police to comprehend how such a massive gathering turned catastrophic. Later, she proceeded to the Karur Government Medical College Hospital and other healthcare facilities to meet the injured survivors and grieving families, extending her condolences and assuring them of the Centre's support.
The devastating incident transpired when a throng of thousands surged forward immediately after Vijay finished his speech at the TVK event. Panic erupted in the overcrowded venue, resulting in a fatal crush affecting many, including women and children. Some of the injured remain in critical condition and are undergoing intensive care. The nation has seen an outpouring of grief and support.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed her sorrow over the “unimaginable loss of lives” and prayed for the injured's recovery. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who arrived in Karur shortly after the tragedy, visited the accident site and hospitals, personally meeting with the victims' families.
The state government declared a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to each bereaved family and committed to covering all medical costs for the injured. This horrific event has sparked demands for improved crowd management and safety protocols at political rallies.
Concerns have been raised regarding the preparedness of local authorities and event organizers. A judicial inquiry, led by retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan, is currently underway to investigate any lapses and suggest preventative measures.
While families of the victims express their gratitude for the support, they continue to seek answers and advocate for stricter safety regulations for future public events.
