Srinagar, Oct 28 (NationPress) The government of Jammu and Kashmir has made it clear on Tuesday that the provision of 200 units of complimentary electricity for economically disadvantaged households will only take effect following the installation of rooftop solar panels.
In response to a query in the Assembly, the Jammu and Kashmir administration emphasized that this initiative is tied to the installation of rooftop solar systems as part of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
This clarification was delivered following a question posed by PDP MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra.
The scheme is specifically designed for families identified under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), targeting those at the lowest economic strata.
The administration reported that 2.22 lakh AAY families have been identified throughout Jammu and Kashmir for this initiative.
Each participating household will receive a 2-kilowatt rooftop solar unit, which will allow them to access 200 units of free electricity each month once the system is operational.
The government also noted that the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has granted in-principle approval for the project, which will be implemented under the RESCO/Utility-Led Aggregation model.
Currently, detailed project reports and tendering processes are being completed. "The implementation will commence soon after the necessary approvals are finalized," the statement added.
During discussions on ongoing power reforms, the government highlighted that 6.52 lakh smart meters have already been installed in Jammu and Kashmir, with 2.81 lakh of them installed in the past two years as part of the RDSS and PMDP schemes.
Addressing speculations, the government confirmed that there are no intentions to privatize the installation or management of smart meters.
The rollout is being managed by AMI Service Providers under strict regulatory supervision. However, opposition members have urged the government to expedite the implementation of the free electricity pledge, especially in light of rising electricity prices and the challenges of winter.
