Kolkata, Oct 29 (NationPress) Officers from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted a raid on a businessman’s residence in the Taratala region of Kolkata, leading to the seizure of over Rs 1 crore in cash along with valuable jewellery.
According to sources within the central investigation agency, this operation was part of a wider inquiry into alleged corruption in municipal recruitment.
The investigation is ongoing at the businessman’s home, while additional searches are also taking place in the Baguihati area located in northern Kolkata.
In the early hours, ED officials targeted the residence of a businessman suspected to have connections to the recruitment scandal.
As per ED sources, the total amount recovered so far stands at Rs 1,20,00,000.
Counting of the cash is still underway. Investigators are working to determine the origins of this substantial cash amount and any potential links to the recruitment corruption case. Simultaneously, another ED team has proceeded to Baguihati to investigate a related matter.
Recently, the ED obtained intelligence regarding several firms implicated in the municipal recruitment corruption case. Consequently, various locations, including Beliaghata, were raided on Tuesday.
On the same day, officials from the agency searched the residence of a business family at 75 Hemchandra Naskar Road in Beliaghata. Approximately six ED agents participated in this operation.
This property is owned by two well-known businessman brothers, Biswajit Chowdhury and Ranajit Chowdhury, who are recognized as cloth traders and operate various businesses. The elder brother, Biswajit, specializes in textiles, while Ranajit is engaged in the construction sector.
Recently, the ED also raided the office of State Fire Minister Sujit Bose and his son’s restaurant based on insights related to the recruitment case. Additionally, an official from the South Dum Dum Municipality has been summoned for questioning.
