New Delhi, Aug 13 (NationPress) The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has called on the food manufacturing sector to provide truthful and honest declarations on food labels and packaging.
During the National Stakeholder Consultation on ‘Comprehensive Analysis of Regulatory Framework on Food Labelling, Advertisement and Claims’ at Vigyan Bhawan, the FSSAI emphasized the shared responsibility of ensuring that the information on food packages is accurate, transparent, and truthful, thus empowering consumers to make informed, safe, and healthy choices with confidence.
In her opening remarks, Health and Family Welfare Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava highlighted the necessity of ethical and truthful practices in food labelling and advertising.
“The landscape is evolving rapidly. Today, we have global exposure, necessitating the adoption of positive changes and best practices while intensifying scrutiny of food products. Consultations like this are critical in our fast-paced world,” said Srivastava.
Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare urged the industry to “make truthful and honest declarations, voluntarily disclose product contents, and refrain from misleading advertisements and manipulative tactics.”
“Food labelling should not merely function as a marketing tool; it must embody the fundamental trust between manufacturers and consumers. We seek a truthful and honest declaration of all ingredients, allowing consumers to make final choices,” she added.
The consultation convened approximately 700 representatives from governmental bodies, scientific experts, and food businesses to assess the effectiveness of current regulations.
Experts also discussed implementation hurdles and examined methods to align with global standards to enhance consumer protection and promote public health.
This event is part of an ongoing series of national-level stakeholder dialogues aimed at addressing critical regulatory issues requiring collaborative engagement.
By collaborating closely with industry stakeholders, academia, consumer organizations, farmer groups, and regulatory agencies, the FSSAI seeks to incorporate sector-specific viewpoints and practical insights into its regulatory framework, ensuring that policies are both effective and aligned with public health priorities.
