Puthuppally (Kerala), July 18 (NationPress) On the occasion of the second death anniversary of two-time Congress Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, took a moment during his address to subtly critique the ruling CPI(M) and the RSS, asserting that leaders lack empathy for the people.
In the political landscape of Kerala, the long-standing factions have been represented by the CPI(M)-led Left and the Congress-led UDF. Notably, the BJP has emerged as a significant political entity in recent years, currently holding a 16 percent vote share in the state.
During a recent visit, Union Home Minister Amit Shah urged the Kerala BJP unit to aim for a 25 percent vote share in the upcoming local body elections.
While honoring the late Oommen Chandy, LoP Rahul Gandhi expressed that he gained valuable insights from him.
He began his remarks by stating his political involvement since 2004 and his experiences with various politicians.
“Over time, I understood that the effectiveness of a politician isn't measured by their eloquence but by their genuine connection to the issues they address. True feelings stem from humility and inner conviction,” he articulated.
Addressing his political adversaries in Kerala, the MP stated his opposition to the ideologies of the RSS and CPI(M).
“I challenge and contest them in the arena of ideas through discourse. However, my primary critique is their inability to grasp the emotions of the people,” asserted LoP Gandhi.
He added, “Without a connection to the populace, without touching their hearts, true leadership is unattainable. The unfortunate reality in Indian politics is that many leaders lack empathy for the citizens,” emphasized the Congress MP.
The commemoration took place in the courtyard of the renowned St. George Orthodox Church in Puthuppally, where Oommen Chandy rests in a specially constructed tomb.
Despite the rain, numerous supporters and admirers, along with family members, gathered to honor Chandy.
LoP Gandhi first visited the tomb to light a candle in memory of the respected leader.
Chandy passed away on July 18, 2023, in Bengaluru while receiving treatment for throat cancer.
The journey of his body from his residence in the state capital to his hometown in Puthuppally took over 30 hours, covering 130 kilometers, as thousands lined the route to pay their final tributes.
His legacy as a legislator for the Puthuppally Assembly constituency spanned from 1970 until his passing, a remarkable 53-year tenure that is unlikely to be surpassed.
As LoP Rahul launched a pointed critique against both the CPI(M) and RSS, the Congress supporters appeared to be in high spirits, celebrating this momentous occasion on the second anniversary of a beloved Kerala politician, as preparations for the third anniversary proceed with the anticipation of a new government taking office soon.
