The Gujarat State Election Commission (SEC) on Wednesday, 16 September announced that elections to the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) and the Okha and Thara nagarpalikas will be held on 11 October, with votes to be counted on 13 October. The poll schedule covers three urban local bodies across Gujarat and coincides with bye-elections for seven vacant seats in various district and taluka panchayats.

Key Election Dates

The formal election notification for all three bodies will be issued on 21 September. Candidates may file nominations until 26 September, and the last date for withdrawal of candidatures is 29 September. Polling will be conducted using electronic voting machines (EVMs). The SEC has maintained a uniform schedule across all three municipal bodies.

What Is at Stake in Gandhinagar

The GMC election will contest 44 Corporator seats spread across 11 wards. The corporation, established in 1966, was elevated to municipal corporation status in 2010 and held its inaugural municipal elections in April 2011, which the Indian National Congress won by a narrow margin. In the 2016 election — when the corporation had 32 seats — the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress won 16 seats each, producing a hung house. Congress councillor Pravin Patel subsequently defected to the BJP, enabling the party to form the board. A later delimitation exercise expanded the corporation's jurisdiction to peripheral areas, raising the seat count to its current 44.

BJP's Dominant 2021 Showing

In the most recent general election in 2021, the BJP swept 41 of 44 seats, leaving Congress with two seats and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with one. The upcoming contest will be the first test of the BJP's hold over the state capital's civic body since that landslide, and the first opportunity for the AAP — which has since expanded its Gujarat footprint — to mount a more organised challenge.

Okha and Thara Nagarpalikas

Beyond Gandhinagar, the SEC has simultaneously called general elections for the Okha Nagarpalika in Devbhumi Dwarka district and the Thara Nagarpalika in Banaskantha district. Both bodies follow the same broad schedule: notification on 21 September, polling on 11 October, and counting on 13 October.

The announcement comes five years after the 2021 GMC polls, in which the BJP's near-total sweep mirrored the party's dominance in Gujarat's state assembly elections.
