Gandhinagar Green Lok Sabha: 1.1 crore trees to be planted in 2026-27 drive
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Home Minister Amit Shah's parliamentary constituency of Gandhinagar is set to undergo a sweeping green transformation, with a target of planting over 1.1 crore trees across the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency during 2026-27. A mass plantation drive is scheduled for 12 July under the theme 'Gandhinagar Lok Sabha – Green Lok Sabha', spanning all seven Assembly segments of the constituency.
Scale and Targets
According to officials, a total of 1,01,10,026 trees are planned to be planted across the constituency during the year. The Sanand Assembly segment carries the largest share of the burden, with 52.64 lakh trees earmarked for plantation. Large-scale greening is also planned in Kalol and Gandhinagar (North) to further expand the parliamentary constituency's green cover.
Citizens have been urged to plant at least one sapling for each family member and commit to nurturing it over time. An online registration portal has been launched to facilitate public participation at designated locations across the constituency on 12 July.
Building on Past Gains
The campaign is not starting from scratch. Officials noted that intensive plantation carried out between 2019 and 2025 resulted in an 11.25 per cent rise in green cover within the parliamentary constituency. The current drive seeks to consolidate and extend those gains through community participation and sustained tree care.
Urban greening efforts have also been running parallel across Ahmedabad and surrounding areas, reinforcing the constituency's broader environmental push.
94 High-Tech Oxygen Parks
Around 94 high-tech 'Oxygen Parks' have already been developed in the urban parts of the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency using the Japanese Miyawaki technique and dense plantation methods — an approach designed to establish urban forests within a relatively short period. These parks are spread across several Ahmedabad wards, including Sabarmati, Gota, Thaltej, Bodakdev, Sarkhej, and Vejalpur.
Community Participation at the Core
'The programme aims to expand green cover across the parliamentary constituency through community participation and sustained care of newly planted trees,' officials said. Organisers have called on residents to register online and take part in the 12 July drive, with the appeal framing tree-planting as a household responsibility rather than a one-time event.
With the drive set to roll out across all seven Assembly segments, the coming weeks will test whether the ambitious numerical target translates into durable green cover on the ground.
