New Delhi, April 5 (NationPress) The absence of Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra during the intense discussion on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha has drawn sharp criticism from the BJP, which accused them of neglecting the Muslim community they frequently claim to support.
BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya took to X to criticize their absence during this vital debate.
He stated, “The Muslim community must recognize that, for the Congress and the Gandhi family, they are merely a convenience. Despite a Congress directive, Priyanka Vadra was absent from Parliament on the day the Waqf Amendments were introduced in the Lok Sabha. Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi—the Leader of the Opposition and self-proclaimed advocate for Muslims—had ample time but opted not to voice his opinions on the Bill. Let it be noted for future reference: when it counted, the Gandhis and the Congress turned their backs on the Muslims they profess to represent.”
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, aimed at resolving issues surrounding the management of Waqf properties, was approved by both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha this week. During the heated discussions, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, tweeted that the Bill is a “weapon” devised to “marginalize Muslims.” Nonetheless, in an unexpected turn, Gandhi refrained from participating in the parliamentary debate, prompting widespread backlash.
In addition to the controversy, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the Congress General Secretary and Member of Lok Sabha from Wayanad, was also absent from the House despite a Congress directive. The absence of the Gandhi siblings during the discussion on the Waqf Bill raised eyebrows.
This incident has sparked further political debate, with critics accusing Congress leadership of lacking commitment to the issues they claim to champion. The BJP has capitalized on this situation, questioning the sincerity of the Gandhis in their supposed representation of Muslim interests.
Amit Malviya’s statements in his X post aim to emphasize that “the Gandhis are not genuinely invested in the welfare of the Muslim community but instead utilize them as a political tool when it suits them.”
By describing the Muslim community as a “convenience” for Congress, Malviya suggests that the party exploits their support during elections or significant political moments yet abandons them when critical decisions or actions are necessary, analysts explain. This absence, according to Malviya, indicates that the Congress leadership is not sincerely dedicated to advocating for the causes they claim to represent.
