Former Congress MLA Rahul Bondre on Monday night called off a widely anticipated switch to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) — hours before his scheduled formal induction — after Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, personally intervened with a late-night phone call. The dramatic reversal in Chikhli, Buldhana district, Maharashtra has dealt a significant psychological blow to the BJP's local campaign and forced a last-minute recalibration of party strategy in the region.

Bondre had been set to formally join the BJP on Tuesday at its state headquarters in Mumbai, in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and BJP state president Ravindra Chavan.
