Guwahati, Sep 27 (NationPress) On Friday, Gauhati University revealed a range of initiatives aimed at commemorating the legacy of Assam's beloved singer, composer, and cultural figure, Zubeen Garg, who recently passed away, according to officials.
In appreciation of his significant impact on music and culture, the University will rename its Centre for Performing Arts and Culture to the Zubeen Garg Centre for Performing Arts and Culture.
To honor his memory further, a statue of the iconic singer will be erected, and a coffee table book chronicling his remarkable life and artistic journey will also be published.
The University’s Inter-College Youth Festival will introduce a special segment called the Zubeen Garg Song, ensuring that his music continues to motivate future generations of performers.
Commenting on this announcement, Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University, stated: “Zubeen Garg was more than an artist; he was an emotion that united Assam and expressed the profound aspirations of its people. According to Mahanta, through these initiatives, Gauhati University reaffirms its commitment to honoring the life and contributions of one of Assam’s most cherished cultural figures, ensuring that his artistry and spirit will continue to resonate for years to come.
In a related note, following the passing of the cultural icon and renowned singer Zubeen Garg, the state government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who led a high-level review meeting with the Director General of Police, senior CID officials, and the Chief Secretary, previously announced that the SIT would consist of some of the “finest officers of Assam Police” and would operate independently with absolute professional integrity.
He reassured the people of Assam that “no stone will be left unturned” in the investigation. The SIT will be headed by Special DGP (CID) M.P. Gupta, with Rosie Kalita, SSP (CM Vigilance), appointed as the Chief Investigating Officer.
Several senior officials, including Additional SPs, Deputy SPs, Inspectors, and Sub-Inspectors from CID and other districts, have been included as Additional and Assistant Investigating Officers.
All officers associated with the SIT will remain with the team until the investigation is concluded.
