Kolkata, Sep 27 (NationPress) Justice Sujay Paul is set to assume the role of Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. The current Acting Chief Justice, Justice Soumen Sen, is transitioning to the position of Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court. This change comes as per a notification from the Union Ministry of Law and Justice issued on Friday.
Justice Paul previously served as a Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court before his transfer to the Telangana High Court in 2024. Earlier this year, he was again transferred to the Calcutta High Court.
Following the retirement of T.S. Sivagnanam, the former Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, on September 15, Justice Soumen Sen was appointed as Acting Chief Justice temporarily.
It became evident that Justice Sen's tenure was limited, as the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, had already recommended him for the Chief Justice position in Meghalaya.
Justice Sen has served as a judge in the Calcutta High Court since April 13, 2011, with his term extending until July 26, 2027. Throughout his tenure, he has presided over numerous significant cases.
He gained media attention due to disagreements with former Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay, now a BJP Lok Sabha member from the Tamluk constituency in East Midnapore district of West Bengal. The dispute arose when Justice Sen's division bench overturned a ruling made by the single-judge bench of Justice Gangopadhyay, prompting the Supreme Court to intervene and transfer the case from the Calcutta High Court.
