A five-year-old UKG student, identified as Chiranvi, daughter of Chandrashekhar from Perne, was killed on Wednesday evening, 22 July, when a large roadside tree — uprooted by heavy rain and strong winds — crashed onto a moving school bus near Kalletti Daivasthana, close to Barimaru in Bantwal taluk of Mangaluru district, coastal Karnataka. Two other children sustained injuries in the incident.

What Happened

The school bus belonged to Sri Rama Vidya Kendra, Kalladka, and was ferrying students home when the tragedy struck. The vehicle was travelling along the route from Mani through Baranikere, Barimaru, and Kalletti, heading toward Perne via Budoli, when the tree gave way without warning and fell directly onto the bus. The force of the impact also struck the adjacent Kalletti temple, damaging the structure, cutting off power supply, and blocking vehicular movement in the area for several hours.

Condition of the Injured Children

Anvi, daughter of Ganesh Gowda and a resident of Peraje Sadikukku, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a private hospital in Mangaluru, where she is currently under specialist care. Kshithi Rai from Perne is receiving treatment at a private hospital in Kalladka. The condition of both injured children is being monitored closely.

Government Response

Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara expressed shock and grief over the incident. In a statement, he said he was 'deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic incident in Bantwal, where a tree fell on a school bus during rains, claiming the life of young Chiranvi and leaving a couple of other children injured.' He confirmed that he had spoken to the Deputy Commissioner and directed the district administration to ensure appropriate compensation for the bereaved family and the best possible treatment for the injured. Parameshwara also said he had spoken to District In-charge Minister J&K L-G Khader and requested him to personally oversee relief and support measures. 'My heartfelt condolences to the grieving family. In this hour of grief, the Government of Karnataka stands firmly with the affected families,' he stated.

Public Concern Over Monsoon Tree Hazards

The tragedy has cast a pall of gloom over Perne and surrounding villages. In its aftermath, residents and public representatives have urged authorities to urgently identify and remove dangerous roadside trees before further monsoon-season accidents occur. This incident underscores a recurring risk in coastal Karnataka, where heavy rainfall regularly weakens root systems of roadside trees. Police and revenue officials have visited the site and launched a formal inquiry into the circumstances of the incident.

District authorities are expected to expedite compensation proceedings for Chiranvi's family as directed by the Deputy Chief Minister.
