Hyderabad, June 9 (NationPress) - On Monday, the Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, inaugurated the foundation stone for the Global Centre of Excellence on Millets at the ICAR - Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) in Hyderabad.
During the event, Chouhan expressed that this Centre of Excellence will serve as a pivotal guide for global research.
The new facility aims to enhance the ongoing research initiatives at IIMR by creating state-of-the-art amenities, including research laboratories, skill development centres, and outreach hubs.
The foundation has received a financial backing of Rs 250 crore to establish this Centre, which is part of the PM Shree Anna Yojana (millets), a scheme designed to promote millet production and consumption, thereby ensuring food and nutritional security for a healthier India.
The foundation laying took place during the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan programme.
Notable attendees included Union Minister of State for Agriculture Bhagirath Choudhary, Telangana’s Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, along with various state and Central government officials, agricultural scientists, and farmers.
Chouhan emphasized that the Central government prioritizes agriculture and farmers’ welfare, stating that a developed Bharat cannot exist without developed agriculture.
Agriculture currently contributes 18 percent to the national GDP and sustains half of the population. This year, the sector achieved a growth rate of 5.4 percent, with record yields of rice, wheat, and maize.
The Agriculture Minister highlighted government initiatives aimed at securing food availability, increasing farmers’ income, ensuring access to nutritious food, and conserving soil for future generations.
He announced a new initiative to bridge the gap between laboratories and agricultural fields to implement research findings for Viksit Krishi.
Chouhan further disclosed that among the 16,000 agricultural scientists in the nation, a specialized team of 2,170 scientists will engage directly with farmers, addressing their concerns based on the specific agro-climatic conditions of their areas.
He reiterated the collaborative efforts of both Central and state governments to meet these objectives.
Telangana’s Agriculture Minister Nageswara Rao requested the establishment of a regional office for the Coconut Development Board in Telangana and sought assistance to enhance oil palm production.
