New Delhi, Dec 7 (NationPress) President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday conveyed her profound grief over the extensive fire that engulfed a well-known club in North Goa’s Arpora, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 23 lives and leaving many others injured.

Offering her heartfelt condolences to the families affected, the President characterized the event as a devastating tragedy and wished for the rapid recovery of those receiving medical care.

In a message shared on X, she stated: “I am deeply saddened by the tragic fire incident in North Goa district that has led to the loss of precious lives. My sincere condolences to the grieving families. May they find strength during this challenging period. I pray for the swift recovery of the injured.”

This statement from the President comes amidst a wave of shock across the nation following the late-night inferno at Birch by Romeo Lane, a popular nightlife spot situated near the lively Baga beach. The incident, which took place shortly after midnight on Saturday, stands as one of the deadliest fires recorded in the coastal region in recent times.

The catastrophic fire at the renowned nightlife venue in North Goa’s Arpora has claimed at least 23 lives late Saturday, marking one of the most tragic incidents the coastal state has experienced in recent years.

The flames erupted around midnight at Birch by Romeo Lane, a club in the bustling Baga area, which attracts large crowds due to its closeness to one of Goa’s most visited beaches.

As per police reports, the fire is suspected to have been ignited by an explosion of a cylinder within the premises.

The sudden blast is thought to have provided little time for those inside — many of whom were employees — to escape.

Fire engines from various stations were quickly dispatched, and firefighters battled the blaze into the early hours of Sunday. Rescue teams continued their operations until dawn, searching through debris for survivors and attempting to manage lingering hotspots.

Officials confirmed that a large portion of the deceased were staff members who were present at the club when the tragedy struck. Senior officials, including the Director General of Police and teams from North Goa district, arrived promptly at the scene to oversee rescue and relief efforts.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant expressed his deep sorrow regarding the tragedy.

In a post on X, he remarked: “Today is an incredibly painful day for all of us in Goa. A significant fire incident at Arpora has claimed the lives of 23 individuals. I am profoundly saddened and extend my heartfelt condolences to all the affected families during this time of unimaginable grief.”

“I visited the site of the incident and have initiated an inquiry into this matter. The investigation will look into the precise cause of the fire and whether fire safety regulations and building codes were adhered to. Those found accountable will face strict legal repercussions — any negligence will be dealt with severely,” he added.
