Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 26 (NationPress) The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has escalated its inquiry into the Sabarimala gold theft and unauthorized gold plating matter. The team has begun recording statements from the temple's chief priests, known as Thantris, just as the six-week deadline established by the Kerala High Court approaches its end this Thursday.
The priests, Kandarar Rajeevaru and Mohanararu, visited the SIT office to provide comprehensive testimonies regarding the permissions they allegedly issued for the gold plating of the temple's Dwarapalaka (door guardian) idols and gold sheets.
In their accounts, the Thantris emphasized that their function was restricted to providing ritual permissions based exclusively on divine will.
They asserted that they never sanctioned the transportation of temple idols or gold-plated panels to Chennai for any gold plating or renovation activities, clarifying that their permission was solely for minor repairs within the Sabarimala grounds.
They also acknowledged their acquaintance with the primary accused, Unnikrishnan Potti, but denied having authorized any external management of temple assets.
The SIT is probing whether gold that originally belonged to the temple has been replaced with substandard materials, with approximately 475 grams of gold officially reported missing.
Samples taken from the allegedly gold-plated panels and sculptures have been sent for forensic examination, with results anticipated to be pivotal when presented to the High Court on December 3.
Should it be confirmed that newer panels have been installed, it may dramatically change the trajectory of the investigation.
The inquiry is progressively targeting individuals in elevated administrative and political roles.
To date, former Travancore Devaswom Board presidents A. Padmakumar and N. Vasu, in addition to four employees of the Devaswom Board, including a currently serving official, have been detained.
Investigators are also scrutinizing whether members of the preceding state government, including former Devaswom Minister and senior CPI(M) legislator Kadakampally Surendran, had any involvement in the alleged misconduct during their time in office.
Padmakumar's passport has been confiscated, and investigators are looking into whether he traveled abroad alongside Potti.
Financial transactions tied to the case are also under investigation.
Former Board members have alleged that Padmakumar modified official records to enable the transfer of gold panels to Potti, a development viewed as a significant blow to him.
As the SIT gears up for its next interim report, the case is set to enter a crucial phase, potentially extending into the accountability of senior officials linked to the Sabarimala temple administration.
On Wednesday, the Court remanded Padmakumar to two days of police custody.
