Guwahati, Nov 26 (NationPress) South Africa's off-spinner Simon Harmer praised the team's remarkable 2-0 series victory over India, referring to it as ‘a hell of an effort’. On the fifth day at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Harmer achieved a match-winning six-for, leading South Africa to an impressive 408-run win over India.
Harmer also earned the Player of the Series accolade with 17 wickets at an average of 8.94 and a strike rate of 28, marking South Africa's first Test series win in India in 25 years. “As I mentioned in the last Test, it’s been a long journey. A decade later, the feeling is completely different. I will leave with far more cherished memories from this time. To defeat a strong Indian team is truly a remarkable achievement,” Harmer stated at the end of the match.
Reflecting on his six wickets in Guwahati, Harmer remarked, “Watching our second innings, after 40 overs, the ball softened, making it easier to bowl. There were a few odd balls, like the one that got Rishabh. It felt great to contribute by taking wickets and achieving a fifer in India. We knew they'd fight hard in the second innings, but we were confident that if we bowled in the right areas, we could make things happen.”
He commended Aiden Markram and Marco Jansen for their exceptional catches and credited skipper Temba Bavuma for his advice on adjusting his bowling angles. “Sharp catches from Markram in the slips and Jansen were crucial. Bowling from that end felt favorable for left-handers, and Temba's suggestion to change angles was spot on, leading to my wickets,” added Harmer.
Harmer also acknowledged his bowling partner Keshav Maharaj for his valuable support. “Kesh's record speaks volumes, and he deserves to be recognized as the number one spinner. I'm glad to play a supportive role. I struggled with my batting, Jasprit had my number, but I look forward to another county stint with Essex and a few games with the Titans next,” he mentioned.
Jansen, who made significant all-round contributions, emphasized the teamwork behind South Africa's success. “Winning any Test match is a wonderful feeling, and securing a Test series in India is particularly special. Everyone stepped up in critical moments, showcasing a true team performance,” he said.
“We focused on executing the fundamentals well, assessing the wicket, and adapting our plans as needed. If something wasn't working, we were willing to change,” he explained.
He also credited head coach Shukri Conrad for enhancing his batting skills. “All thanks to Shukes for encouraging me to play my game freely. In the first Test, I was a bit tense, but I aimed to express myself this time,” Jansen concluded.
Jansen added that the series win over India signifies their commitment to diligent preparation and team improvement. “It reflects our hard work. We know our objectives and how to perform collectively and individually,” he stated. “We continuously strive for enhancement, always looking for ways to improve, but ultimately, when we are on the field, we play for one another and give our all.”
