Rawalpindi, Oct 23 (NationPress) Spinner Simon Harmer achieved his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket, finishing with impressive figures of 6-50, leading South Africa to a commanding eight-wicket victory against Pakistan in the second Test. This victory at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium allowed South Africa to equal the two-match series at 1-1 on Thursday.
In their first win of the ICC World Test Championship cycle, Harmer and fellow spinner Keshav Maharaj were instrumental, taking a combined total of 17 wickets in the match, as Pakistan was bowled out for just 136 runs in their second innings.
South Africa successfully chased down the modest target of 68 runs in only 75 balls, placing them joint fourth in the WTC points table.
Entering day four at 23/4, Pakistan pinned their hopes on Babar Azam, who managed to score a half-century early in the session. However, just three balls later, Harmer made his mark by trapping Azam lbw, initiating a batting collapse. He also dismissed Mohammad Rizwan and Noman Ali, marking his career milestone of 1000 first-class wickets and becoming the fourth South African bowler to achieve this feat.
After Shaheen Afridi was run out for the third time without scoring, Salman Ali Agha briefly resisted with a few boundaries. Yet, Maharaj dismissed him and Sajid Khan to conclude Pakistan's innings.
Maharaj's match figures stood at 9/136, while Harmer's impressive performance included 8/125 overall, with 6-50 in the second innings.
Chasing a mere 68, Aiden Markram aggressively targeted the Pakistan spinners with sweeps and reverse sweeps before being dismissed lbw for 42 when only four runs were needed for victory. Although Tristan Stubbs fell for a duck shortly after, Ryan Rickelton sealed the win with a stylish six, finishing on 25 not out.
