Bhopal, Jan 28 (NationPress) Governor Mangubhai Patel remarked on Tuesday that Madhya Pradesh has emerged as a frontrunner in the battle against tuberculosis (TB) and sickle cell anaemia.
The Governor noted that the accomplishments of health initiatives highlight the swift implementation of these programs.
He asserted that these achievements inspire the drive to establish new benchmarks with zeal.
Governor Patel made these comments while evaluating the state government's endeavors concerning the elimination campaigns for sickle cell and TB, alongside the execution of the Panchayat Extension to Scheduled Areas (PESA) Act, during a meeting at his office in Bhopal.
The meeting was attended by State Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Prahlad Singh Patel and Higher Education Minister Inder Singh Parmar, who also oversees the state's AYUSH department.
During discussions with the Ministers and senior officials, Governor Patel stressed the significance of combining modern and traditional medical practices in combating sickle cell and TB.
The Governor requested the participation of the AYUSH department in treatment and encouraged parallel research on the efficacy of Ayurveda and homeopathy. He highlighted the need for public awareness about affordable medications available at Jan Aushadhi Kendras and ensuring their accessibility for patients and carriers, along with screening initiatives.
Additionally, the Governor underscored the necessity of empowering tribal communities by informing them about the rights bestowed upon Gram Sabhas via the PESA Act.
Previously, in July 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the National Sickle Cell Anemia Eradication Mission from Madhya Pradesh.
The NSCAEM aims to tackle the urgent health issues associated with sickle cell disease, particularly within the tribal population, and was introduced in the Union Budget 2023.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has identified sickle cell disease as one of the top 10 concerns in India's tribal health, with Madhya Pradesh displaying the highest prevalence.
Approximately 961,492 individuals are identified as carriers of Sickle Cell, while 67,861 are afflicted with Sickle Cell anaemia in Madhya Pradesh.
According to the ICMR report, there is a significant prevalence of Sickle Cell Anemia among six tribes spread across 15 districts in Madhya Pradesh.
The tribes affected include Pradhan, Panika, Barela, Bhilala, Jharia, and Mehra.
Fifteen districts with a high incidence of Sickle Cell Anemia include Jhabua, Alirajpur, Dhar, Barwani, Khandwa, Khargone, Burhanpur, Betul, Chhindwara, Jabalpur, Mandla, Dindori, Katni, Umaria, Shahdol, and Anuppur, as per the ICMR report.
