The base salary for an MP set in 2018 was Rs 1,00,000 per month, aimed at aligning their pay with inflation rates and the increasing cost of living.
According to the 2018 adjustments, MPs were entitled to a constituency allowance of Rs 70,000 to cover expenses related to maintaining their offices and engaging with voters in their districts. In addition, they received Rs 60,000 monthly as an office allowance and Rs 2,000 as a daily allowance during Parliamentary sessions. These allowances will also see an increase.
Moreover, MPs receive an annual allowance for phone and internet usage. They are granted 34 free domestic flights each year for personal and professional travel, along with first-class train travel whenever necessary. They can also claim mileage when using road transportation. MPs benefit from 50,000 free units of electricity and 4,000 kilolitres of water annually.
The government also caters to their housing needs. During their five-year term, MPs are provided with rent-free housing in New Delhi, which may include hostel rooms, apartments, or bungalows based on their rank. Those choosing not to use the official accommodations can apply for a monthly housing allowance.
