Union Cabinet Endorses 2% DA Increase for Central Government Employees
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 18 (NationPress) The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has officially sanctioned a 2% hike in Dearness Allowance (DA) for central government employees, effective from January 1, 2026. This adjustment aims to enhance their net pay.
The Cabinet has also approved the disbursement of an additional DA installment to central government staff and Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners, which raises the current rate of 58% of the basic salary or pension by 2%, providing necessary compensation for inflation.
According to an official announcement, the overall financial burden on the government due to this DA and DR increase will amount to approximately Rs 6,791.24 crore annually. This decision is set to benefit around 50.46 lakh central government employees and 68.27 lakh pensioners.
This adjustment follows the established formula derived from the recommendations of the 7th Central Pay Commission.
The enhancement in DA is a timely boost to salaries, especially as discussions about pay restructuring under the anticipated 8th Pay Commission intensify.
In parallel, the National Council–Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM) has submitted a memorandum advocating for a significantly elevated fitment factor of 3.83.
If this proposal is accepted, it could dramatically increase the minimum basic salary from Rs 18,000 to approximately Rs 69,000, representing a major overhaul of the pay structure.
The NC-JCM is pushing for substantial enhancements to the minimum salary for central government workers in its collective memorandum to the 8th Pay Commission, including provisions for one month's wages as gratuity and other benefits.
The fitment factor serves as a multiplier used for salary revisions, factoring in elements such as living costs and inflation, and applies to the existing basic salary to determine new remuneration in a pay commission.
Additionally, the NC-JCM has proposed a 6% yearly increment, two increments upon promotion, ensuring a minimum benefit of Rs 10,000, among other suggestions. The adjustments made by the new Pay Commission would impact over 50 lakh central employees and nearly 65 lakh pensioners.
