New Delhi, Oct 18 (NationPress) The government announced on Saturday that the advantages of the recent GST reductions, which took effect on September 22, will be available to consumers during the festive season, highlighting that consumption is a vital driver for economic growth.
During a press briefing, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, and Railways & Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that the latest GST reforms have fostered a positive trend in consumption.
“These tax reductions are not limited to the festive period. Such reductions lead to enhanced collections, thereby allowing for a better fiscal position to give back to the public. We expect demand to remain strong even post-festivities,” stated FM Sitharaman.
She also noted that the GST dispute resolution mechanism has been implemented effectively.
Since the initiation of GST reforms, the National Consumer Helpline has recorded 3,981 inquiries related to GST issues (as of October 2). Among these, 31 percent were questions and 69 percent were formal complaints that are being processed for resolution.
Of the total complaints, 1,992 have been escalated to the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) for further handling, while 761 grievances were directed in real-time to relevant partner companies for immediate resolution.
According to Sitharaman, most complaints stem from a misunderstanding between the announced GST cuts and their actual implementation.
Regarding GST cuts, the Finance Minister remarked that the pricing of drugs, medicines, and associated equipment is being closely monitored to ensure that the benefits are passed on.
The automobile sector has reported a positive response to the passing of GST cuts to consumers, resulting in a surge in sales.
Goyal noted that nearly all e-commerce platforms have implemented GST cuts and offered additional discounts during Navratri, based on our observations.
“Indirect taxes affect 1.4 billion Indians, and a benefit of Rs 2.5 lakh crore has been conferred through GST reductions. The multiplier effect from these tax cuts has already provided a considerable boost to the economy,” the Commerce Minister highlighted.
Vaishnaw commented that numerous projections were made regarding the uptick in consumption and demand due to GST reforms.
“Thanks to these reforms, we anticipate that consumption may increase by over 10 percent this year, indicating a strong possibility of additional consumption amounting to around Rs 20 lakh crore,” he added.
