Bengaluru, Sep 4 (NationPress) The Central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has initiated groundbreaking transformations in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) framework, which Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy referred to as a monumental Diwali present for the country.
In a recent press release on Thursday, the Minister highlighted that the Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, has sanctioned next-generation GST reforms.
Kumaraswamy characterized this as a revolutionary step aimed at enhancing the quality of life for citizens and furthering the vision of 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat'.
The new reforms will establish only two GST slabs — 5 percent and 18 percent. This will make essential goods, healthcare, education, agriculture, and automobiles more affordable. Additionally, businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) are expected to experience a significant uplift, he stated with optimism.
Furthermore, Kumaraswamy noted that the reform simplifies the GST system, increasing accessibility, and represents a genuinely people-centric initiative that aims to bring joy to households throughout India.
Under the revamped GST structure, the primary slabs will be 5 percent and 18 percent, with a higher 40 percent rate for sin goods. Officials indicated that the restructured rates will result in increased disposable income for the average citizen, which the government anticipates will be reinvested into the economy, driving growth. These rates will take effect from September 22.
Numerous products, including groceries, footwear, textiles, fertilizers, and renewable energy items, are set to become less expensive.
Goods previously taxed at 12 percent and 28 percent will largely transition to the two main slabs, alleviating the financial strain on families.
This initiative aims to return more financial resources to the middle class, known for their substantial spending, thereby enhancing domestic consumption.
"The comprehensive reforms will benefit... the average citizen, farmers, MSMEs, the middle class, women, and youth," PM Modi tweeted shortly after the Union Finance Minister made the announcements.
