Gujarat Assembly on High Alert After Bomb Threat; Session Resumes Following Security Sweep
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
On March 18, authorities in Gandhinagar heightened security at the Gujarat Legislative Assembly after receiving a threatening email indicating a potential bomb attack at the assembly and other significant sites statewide. During the session in progress, all members, including MLAs, ministers, and staff, were promptly and safely evacuated.
In response, security forces, comprising the police, Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), bomb disposal units, and canine teams, swiftly secured the area and initiated a comprehensive search.
Cybercrime experts began probing the email's source to ascertain if it was a prank or a legitimate terror threat.
No hazardous materials were discovered during the search. An MLA present at the assembly stated, “All security measures were thoroughly adhered to. The assembly has resumed its activities following the verification process, and normal proceedings are in effect.”
Additionally, security checks were intensified around the Secretariat, and a heightened alert status persisted throughout Gandhinagar.
Police and cybercrime units continue to investigate the origin of the threat and are working to identify the perpetrator.
This incident reflects a broader pattern, as several courts in Gujarat, including the Gujarat High Court in Ahmedabad and various district courts in Rajkot, Vadodara, Valsad, Gandhinagar, and Mehsana, have recently received similar bomb threat emails.
These threats have resulted in evacuations and extensive searches by police and bomb detection teams, yet no explosives or other suspicious items were found, leading to the conclusion that the threats were hoaxes.
Moreover, schools across Gujarat have also encountered numerous false bomb threats, prompting evacuations and security responses. In January, around 20 schools in Ahmedabad received threatening emails ahead of Republic Day containing extremist slogans, leading to police and bomb disposal teams conducting thorough checks before declaring the messages as hoaxes.
At the same time, another series of coordinated emails targeted approximately 34 schools in Ahmedabad and Vadodara, resulting in campus evacuations and detailed inspections by security personnel, ultimately deemed false alarms.
