Gandhinagar, March 18 (NationPress) The Director General of Police (DGP) of Gujarat, Dr. K.L.N. Rao, conducted an on-site inspection at the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday in response to a bomb threat received via email. This alarming situation triggered a temporary evacuation of lawmakers, staff, and visitors, consequently postponing the ongoing Budget session.

The anonymous email, sent shortly before the Assembly's scheduled commencement at 9 a.m., asserted that an explosive device was planted within the premises. As a precautionary measure, police halted the session and evacuated all individuals from the chamber and adjacent areas.

DGP Rao, accompanied by senior law enforcement officials, thoroughly examined the Assembly grounds and all entry points to ensure adequate security protocols were enforced.

Teams from the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), along with local police and specialized units, executed a comprehensive search of the legislative complex.

After an extensive investigation, no explosive devices or suspicious items were discovered, allowing the session to recommence around 10 a.m. following clearance from security personnel.

According to Gandhinagar SP Ravi Teja Shetty, the threat was conveyed through an email, and the bomb disposal teams conducted a meticulous examination, which revealed no signs of real danger.

“The bomb threat email received by the Gujarat Legislative Assembly prompted BDDS teams to perform a thorough inspection; however, nothing suspicious was uncovered,” he stated.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Dinesh Singh Kushwaha confirmed that the threat was ultimately identified as a hoax. “The threat turned out to be unfounded, with no actual danger identified. Arrangements resumed, and everyone was seated in Dwarka Hall before returning to the Assembly,” he remarked.

Another BJP legislator, Mahesh Kaswala, verified that MLAs were relocated to a nearby hall as a precautionary measure.

In the aftermath, leaders from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) called for urgent action against those responsible for the threat.

AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava commented, "The Gujarat government and the Home Department must utilize modern technology to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for such threats and enforce stringent penalties to prevent similar incidents in the future."

He highlighted that threats aimed at schools, colleges, and courts have been frequent in the state, yet no suspects have been arrested in those instances.

Another AAP MLA, Gopal Italia, emphasized that a threat against a legislative body is a “very serious and sensitive issue” and urged immediate action against any individuals or groups responsible for the email to deter future threats.

Police have also engaged cybercrime teams to trace the email's origin and ascertain whether it was a hoax or had malicious intent. A case is anticipated to be filed as part of the ongoing investigation.

In recent weeks, similar bomb threat hoaxes via email have been reported in various locations across Gujarat, prompting evacuations and security checks at court complexes and other public institutions, all of which have ultimately proven to be baseless after thorough inspections by authorities.

Point of View

The incident underscores the necessity for robust security measures at public institutions. While the threat was ultimately deemed unfounded, the swift response highlights the vigilance required to ensure public safety.
