Ahmedabad man arrested for bomb threat email targeting GUJSAIL, schools
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Branch has arrested a 40-year-old man for allegedly sending a threatening email warning of bomb blasts at the GUJSAIL facility at the city airport and several schools across Ahmedabad, officials said on Monday, 11 May. The accused, identified as Bhavesh Patel, a resident of the Sardarnagar area, was traced through a technical and digital investigation initiated after the threat email was received in late March.
The Threatening Email
According to police, the email was received on 25 March on the official account of the Director of GUJSAIL. Written partly in Hindi, the message threatened explosions at the GUJSAIL facility, described as an "Eid gift", and also threatened bomb blasts at all schools in the city. The email additionally contained threats against senior political leaders and demanded the release of an individual named Saurab Biswas from West Bengal, who had earlier been arrested in a separate case involving threatening emails sent across the country. The content triggered immediate concern among authorities given its references to public infrastructure and political figures.
How the Accused Was Traced
A complaint lodged by a GUJSAIL employee prompted the registration of a case and the launch of an investigation under the instructions of Police Commissioner G.S. Malik. A technical analysis traced the threatening email to the address bhavesh4518@gmail.com. Cyber Crime Inspector M.H. Bhetariya and his team examined digital records and, with the assistance of human intelligence inputs, identified the user's location within Ahmedabad. The accused was subsequently detained and taken into custody.
Evidence Recovered
Officials said Patel's mobile phone contained evidence directly linked to the email, including details of the account used to send the message. Forensic examination also led to the recovery of material from deleted folders on the device. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crime) Lavina Sinha confirmed that an extensive digital investigation was carried out before the accused was traced. "Electronic devices and communication records seized during the probe are being analysed to establish the complete chain of events," she said.
Profile of the Accused
Bhavesh Patel, aged 40, is educated up to the B.Com level and is reportedly engaged in construction-related business activities. Officials noted he had also been associated with event management work linked to airport-related operations through business connections. Police custody remand has been obtained for further questioning.
Investigation Ongoing
Investigators are examining the motive behind the offence, whether any individual assisted Patel, and whether there is any connection to a terrorist organisation or group involved in unlawful or disruptive activities. Given that the threats referred to schools, airport premises, and potential bomb blasts, authorities said precautionary security measures were taken at sensitive locations across the city. Officials reiterated that strict action will be taken against anyone who attempts to create panic or issue threats on digital platforms. Further investigation is ongoing.
