Gandhinagar, March 26 (NationPress) The Gujarat Fisheries (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which is scheduled to be introduced during the current Assembly session, intends to create the Fisheries Port and Aquaculture Development Authority.
An official stated that this newly envisioned entity will take charge of the development, regulation, and management of the fisheries sector, particularly focusing on aquaculture, as highlighted in the Gujarat Vidhansabha on Wednesday.
He mentioned that the legislation aims to amend the Gujarat Fisheries Act, 2003, by incorporating new definitions that underscore the significance of aquaculture, which encompasses fish, shrimp, prawn, and seaweed farming across fresh, brackish, and saltwater domains.
Additionally, it outlines critical components of aquaculture business operations, including harvest and post-harvest activities, equipment usage, infrastructure development, and licensing protocols.
The primary goals of the amendment involve establishing a dedicated authority to supervise fisheries and aquaculture management, merging fishing port management with aquaculture growth for a more organized strategy, ensuring the sustainable advancement of Gujarat’s fisheries sector through licensing regulation, quality control, and infrastructure support, and enhancing seafood exports while fortifying the economy by offering financial assistance and policy direction.
The official noted that the Fisheries Port and Aquaculture Development Authority will possess broad powers to carry out surveys and research on aquaculture trends, regulate aquaculture licensing, infrastructure, and quality control, promote skill development initiatives for farmers and entrepreneurs, and oversee the construction and management of fisheries harbor terminals.
“The authority will also be tasked with ensuring pollution-free and hygienic handling of fish products, monitoring and regulating the production, sale, and distribution of aquaculture inputs such as seeds, feed, medicines, and chemicals, implementing disease control measures in aquaculture facilities, certifying aquaculture products, and promoting the adoption of modern technologies,” he added.
He indicated that it will also facilitate market intelligence and export promotion to bolster Gujarat’s status as a premier fisheries hub.
“The financial aspects of the bill suggest that funding for this authority will come from the state’s consolidated fund, although the precise grant amount is still to be determined,” the official elaborated.
He concluded by stating that the proposed legislation is anticipated to transform Gujarat’s fisheries sector by enhancing governance, boosting seafood exports, and ensuring the sustainable growth of aquaculture.
“Upon approval, Gujarat will solidify its position as a frontrunner in fisheries and aquaculture, guaranteeing long-term economic and environmental advantages for the state,” the official remarked.
