Gandhinagar, Feb 27 (NationPress) In response to worries about labor rights violations in the Kutch district, Gujarat's Industries Minister Balvantsinh Rajput emphasized the state government's dedication to ensuring industrial harmony and safeguarding against worker exploitation.
“In 2024, there have been 80 complaints regarding labor law breaches in Kutch. The Gujarat government has implemented measures to maintain industrial peace and promote worker welfare, ensuring strict enforcement of labor regulations throughout the state,” the minister stated.
He noted that following thorough investigations, suitable action was executed in 51 instances, resulting in resolutions for 72 workers across 42 industrial establishments.
“Consequently, over Rs 25 lakh was allocated in compensation and outstanding payments,” he asserted.
The minister further emphasized the swift industrial development in Kutch, which hosts significant industries such as steel, ports, salt production, and renewable energy.
“The count of factories registered under the Factories Act rose from 1,004 in December 2023 to 1,074 by December 2024, indicating the district’s growing industrial sector,” he remarked.
He mentioned that to support worker welfare, the government has increased inspections.
“Over the past year, 740 industrial inspections were carried out, leading to 178 criminal cases against 147 units for labor law violations. These cases were registered under various acts, including the Factories Act of 1948, the Minimum Wages Act of 1948, the Payment of Wages Act of 1936, the Maternity Benefit Act of 1961, and the Payment of Bonus Act of 1965,” he explained.
Additionally, the state government initiated a labor assistance toll-free helpline on October 21, 2022, to address worker complaints.
“By December 2024, the helpline had received 18,347 calls, all of which were resolved with appropriate responses and necessary interventions. Moreover, labor department officials conducted in-person inspections of 734 industrial units,” he added.
The minister disclosed that legal measures were taken against 50 non-compliant units, resulting in 160 criminal cases in labor courts.
“Out of these, 55 cases led to penalties totaling Rs 14.96 lakh against the culpable employers,” he concluded.
