Guwahati, March 10 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on Tuesday the establishment of a significant Science City located near Guwahati, which he claims surpasses the renowned Science City in Kolkata.
According to a post on X, the new facility has been built in Sonapur, just outside Guwahati, covering over 250 bighas of land, with an estimated investment of approximately Rs 300 crore.
The Chief Minister emphasized that this facility has been designed as an interactive hub to foster scientific inquiry and education among both students and the wider community. Currently, it boasts two major exhibits, ‘Eureka’ and ‘Space Odyssey’, which are packed with various interactive displays intended to engage visitors of all ages.
Additionally, Sarma revealed plans to introduce two new sections: ‘Science Innovation’ and ‘Science Park’, aimed at enhancing the educational and recreational features of the complex.
He also highlighted a special virtual reality exhibit that immerses visitors in the historic battle where Ahom general Lachit Borphukan triumphed over Mughal forces, designed to provide an engaging experience of this significant event.
In discussing the project's intent, the Chief Minister pointed out that despite the state's recent establishment of numerous educational institutions focusing on science, student engagement in science education has not been as robust as anticipated.
He stated that the Science City aims to make science education more captivating and accessible for students by offering modern and interactive learning experiences. Sarma encouraged young people and students to visit the facility, emphasizing that such initiatives are vital for sparking curiosity and enthusiasm for scientific learning among the youth.
This Science City is poised to become a prominent educational and tourism landmark in the Guwahati area, further bolstering the state's commitment to promoting science education.
