Georgetown, May 26 (NationPress) Guyana firmly stands with India, asserted Vice-President Bharrat Jagdeo while addressing a visiting group of Indian Members of Parliament on Sunday.
“We oppose terrorism, and we believe that all individuals who commit terrorist acts should face justice,” Jagdeo stated following his meeting with the delegation led by Shashi Tharoor.
“It was a remarkable visit, and I conveyed to the delegation that Guyana firmly stands in solidarity with you,” he continued.
In a social media post on platform X, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is leading a nine-member delegation, remarked that the meeting was “excellent” and noted his expression of “strong sympathy and understanding for India’s concerns” following the terrorist massacre of 26 individuals in Pahalgam by Pakistan-linked terrorists, as well as India’s Operation Sindoor aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure based in Pakistan and its occupied regions in Kashmir.
Tharoor also mentioned that Monday marks Guyana’s 59th Independence Day, and they will be present for the midnight address by President Irfaan Ali.
Highlighting the importance of national unity against terrorism, the delegation, led by Tharoor from the opposition Congress Party, includes representatives from various parties such as Shambhavi of the Lok Janshakti Party, Sarfaraz Ahmad of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, and Milind Murli Deora of the Shiv Sena, along with members from the Bharatiya Janata Party and Telugu Desam Party.
This delegation is one of seven teams dispatched around the globe to explain India’s stance following the Pahalgam terrorist attack by The Resistance Front, associated with the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba.
After India’s Operation Sindoor targeted terrorist strongholds, Pakistan retaliated with attacks against India, which included civilian locations such as places of worship, further escalating tensions.
The Tharoor-led group also engaged with the Indian diaspora during their visit.
BJP member Tejasvi Surya shared on X, “The Indian community in Georgetown, Guyana, warmly received our Parliamentary delegation.”
“We also connected with representatives from various spiritual organizations like the Art of Living, ISKCON, and the Brahma Kumaris,” he noted. “They serve as the spiritual and cultural backbone for the Indian community here.”
During discussions with Vice-President Jagdeo, Tharoor emphasized the potential for economic collaboration between India and Guyana, a rapidly developing nation fueled by recent oil discoveries in its waters.
“Our dialogue also covered various topics related to Guyana’s impressive 30 percent annual economic growth and its development strategies following the oil and gas discovery,” he stated on X.
India’s High Commission in Georgetown highlighted on X that the MPs elaborated on India’s position regarding Pahalgam, #OperationSindoor, and the Indus Water Treaty, stressing India’s firm policy of #ZeroToleranceForTerrorism.
