New Delhi, Dec 3 (NationPress) India's Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Gyanesh Kumar, officially took on the role of Chair of the Council of Member States for the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) for the year 2026 on Wednesday. This appointment signifies a huge acknowledgment of India's credibility as a leader in global election management.
The ceremony unfolded in Stockholm, where CEC Kumar was greeted by India’s Ambassador to Sweden, Anurag Bhushan, and subsequently engaged in talks with International IDEA Secretary-General Dr. Kevin Casas-Zamora.
The Election Commission highlighted that this chairmanship demonstrates the organization's trust in India as a founding member that has continually supported democratic reforms and the strengthening of institutions across its member nations.
In his acceptance address, CEC Kumar emphasized the vastness of India’s democratic process, pointing out that the nation boasts over 900 million electors distributed across 28 states and eight Union Territories.
Looking towards the 2024 General Election, he noted that over 20,000 candidates from 743 political parties participated, including six national and 67 state parties, making it one of the largest electoral processes worldwide.
More than 20 million personnel, which includes one million Booth Level Officers and five million polling staff, contributed to the electoral process.
Reflecting on India’s history of conducting 18 general elections to Parliament and over 400 general elections to State Legislatures since its independence in 1947, the CEC stated that India aims to share not only the insights of the world’s largest and most diverse democracy but also the democratic values and principles that are deeply rooted in India’s civilizational legacy.
Articulating India’s goals for its chairmanship at International IDEA, he expressed a vision that is decisive, ambitious, and action-oriented, under the overarching theme: “Democracy for an inclusive, peaceful, resilient, and sustainable world.”
India will concentrate on two key pillars: “Reimagining Democracy for the Future” and “Independent & Professional Election Management Bodies for Sustainable Democracy.”
In 2026, Mauritius and Mexico will also serve as Vice-Chairs of the International IDEA Council.
