Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Mahajan of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has recovered from a brief hospitalisation at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, after being admitted due to dehydration and low blood pressure, according to senior party leaders who visited him on 27 June. Doctors confirmed there is no heart blockage or any other cardiac issue, and his condition is described as stable and improving rapidly.

Senior BJP Leaders Visit IGMC

Himachal Pradesh BJP President Rajeev Bindal and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur called on Mahajan at the hospital on Saturday to check on his health. The two leaders also spoke with the attending medical team to get a firsthand assessment of his condition.

Bindal and Thakur noted that party workers and well-wishers across Himachal Pradesh had been anxious since news of Mahajan's sudden health episode emerged. They expressed relief at his swift recovery and conveyed prayers for his continued well-being.

Mahajan Speaks on His Recovery

Addressing supporters after his recovery, Mahajan said: 'I am completely healthy now. Due to a sudden health-related issue, I had to undergo medical treatment at the hospital for a short while. By the grace of God, the timely care provided by the doctors, and the prayers, good wishes, and affection of my family, friends, well-wishers, and supporters, I have now fully recovered.'

He further added: 'I sincerely thank everyone who enquired about my well-being through phone calls, messages, and other means. Your affection, trust, and blessings are my greatest strength. I express my heartfelt gratitude and thanks to each one of you for your support and prayers.'

Background: Mahajan's Political Journey

Mahajan's presence in the Rajya Sabha is itself the product of one of Himachal Pradesh's most dramatic political episodes. A three-time legislator, he had served in the Indian National Congress (Congress) for years and was once known for his proximity to incumbent Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. He defected to the BJP just before the 2022 Assembly elections, citing the Congress as 'directionless' and 'lacking vision'.

In February 2024, Mahajan contested the Rajya Sabha election against Congress nominee Abhishek Manu Singhvi. Both candidates secured 34 votes each in the 68-member House, with at least six ruling party legislators reportedly crossing the floor. Three Independent legislators are also believed to have voted in his favour. Mahajan was ultimately declared the winner through a draw of lots — a rare conclusion to a high-stakes parliamentary election.
