Chandigarh, Sep 28 (NationPress) Sriomani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal has called on Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu to ensure severe repercussions for Air India personnel accused of disrespecting a Sikh passenger. She emphasized the importance of training airline staff to respect the articles of faith of all passengers.
In a correspondence to the Union Minister, the Bathinda MP revealed that a Sikh traveler, Jeewan Singh, from Tamil Nadu, faced humiliation and insult from Air India employees at New Delhi International Airport just before his flight to Singapore on Wednesday.
She detailed that Jeewan Singh, who adopted Sikhism in 2023 and maintained an unshorn beard, was mistreated due to his appearance, which the airline staff found objectionable.
Harsimrat Badal pointed out that contrary to established protocols, the staff interrogated Jeewan Singh with intrusive questions such as “Why are you traveling to Singapore? How much cash do you carry? Can you show your bank account? Why are you wearing a turban? And from which caste did you convert to Sikhism?”
Emphasizing that such inquiries breach professional conduct and reflect discrimination based on appearance, the MP demanded a comprehensive investigation into the incident and strict penalties for those who disrespected Jeewan Singh's religious sentiments and subjected him to unnecessary distress.
She also urged the minister to instruct Air India to educate its staff regarding the articles of faith in the Sikh community to prevent such discrimination in the future.
“These directives should be incorporated into the airline's standard operating procedures,” she remarked.
Furthermore, she requested that Air India issue a formal apology to Jeewan Singh to convey that the actions of its staff do not represent the ethos of the airline, which is symbolized by its turbaned Maharaja mascot.
