Chandigarh, July 27 (NationPress) Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Badal has raised a significant alarm regarding the alarming rise in incidents of disrespect and discrimination towards the sacred symbols of the Sikh faith. In a letter directed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he urged for immediate action to halt these distressing occurrences.
Badal highlighted a specific case involving a devoted Sikh girl, Gurpreet Kaur, from Tarn Taran district in Punjab, who was barred from entering her examination venue at Poornima University in Jaipur while attempting to sit for the Rajasthan Judicial Services exam, solely due to her adherence to her sacred articles of faith – the ‘kara’ and ‘kirpan’.
“This incident represents a blatant infringement of her constitutional rights as outlined in Article 25, which guarantees the freedom to practice one’s religion. Article 25 specifically recognizes the ‘kirpan’ among other Sikh symbols that are exempt from restrictions, even during air travel,” Badal stated.
He expressed his astonishment that regulations, if any exist, are being formulated by lower authorities, contradicting the sanctity of the Constitution. The Government of India is urged to issue or reaffirm explicit guidelines to all states and Union Territories regarding the exemption of these essential articles of faith.
Badal emphasized that this is not an isolated incident but part of a troubling trend of increasing religious intolerance aimed at the distinctive Sikh identity.
In a related event from last year, two Sikh girls faced similar barriers while attempting to take the Rajasthan Judicial Services exam in Jodhpur.
“The Sikh identity is inseparable from its symbols, a truth recognized and mandated by the founding fathers of our nation. Yet, some officials presume to act above the Constitution. This must cease as it disrupts communal harmony throughout our country,” Badal remarked. He urged Modi, who understands the deep spiritual and emotional value of these symbols for the devout Sikh community, to issue immediate directives that ensure full respect for these sacred symbols nationwide.
Furthermore, Badal appealed to the Rajasthan High Court to grant Gurpreet Kaur a special opportunity to take her examination, ensuring that her right to practice her faith is honored.
