New Delhi, Dec 24 (NationPress) The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has received approximately 100 complaints from travelers regarding IndiGo flight ticket cancellations, refunds, and compensation issues, as stated by Secretary Nidhi Khare on Wednesday.

These grievances were submitted through the National Consumer Helpline and have been directed to Air Seva, the government’s grievance resolution platform for air travel.

During a press conference held in conjunction with National Consumers Day, Khare noted that numerous passengers expressed concerns about flight cancellations and the delays in receiving refunds.

In some instances, consumers claimed they received only partial refunds, which they perceived as unjust. The ministry has communicated all these issues to the aviation regulatory authority for further action.

In response, IndiGo announced that it has successfully stabilized its operations and is prepared to handle the anticipated increase in passenger volume during the current holiday period.

The airline indicated that since December 9, it has been incrementally increasing its capacity in accordance with government regulations.

Currently, IndiGo operates around 2,100 to 2,200 flights daily, transporting over one million passengers every three days across its network, which encompasses all 138 operational destinations, while consistently upholding its punctuality standards.

IndiGo acknowledged that the aviation industry has recently encountered operational difficulties, particularly due to severe fog in northern India, which disrupted many services. Despite these challenges, IndiGo maintained efficient operations and overall stability.

With forecasts predicting a harsher winter, IndiGo is concentrating on enhancing reliability and minimizing disruptions to alleviate passenger inconvenience.

Looking forward, the airline is preparing to introduce its first Airbus A321XLR aircraft, which is expected to enhance medium- and long-haul connectivity for Indian travelers. As previously announced, IndiGo plans to commence flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Athens starting on January 23, 2026.

Furthermore, IndiGo is exploring additional domestic and international routes as part of its fleet expansion strategy and will provide updates in the future. The airline expressed gratitude to passengers for their ongoing trust and reiterated its commitment to enhancing connectivity within India and to key global locations.

The shares of IndiGo’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation, saw a decline on Wednesday, closing at Rs 5,080.90 on the BSE.

Point of View

It is crucial to recognize the significance of consumer rights in the airline sector. The volume of complaints received about IndiGo highlights a pressing issue that not only affects individual passengers but also raises questions about the broader accountability of airlines. The Ministry's proactive approach in addressing these grievances is commendable, and it is vital to ensure that consumers' voices are heard and addressed efficiently.
