Rudraprayag, June 15 (NationPress) A devastating helicopter crash in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand early on Sunday morning has resulted in the loss of five lives. The helicopter was traveling from Kedarnath Dham to Guptkashi when it went down in the Gaurikund area, attributed to severe weather conditions.
The accident took place around 5:30 a.m., with seven individuals aboard, including the pilot.
Initial reports confirm that five of them perished in the incident, and further information is pending.
Rescue and recovery operations are currently active, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) dispatched to the site of the crash.
Authorities indicated that the helicopter went down in a forested region above Gauri Mai Khark.
Officials believe that poor visibility and adverse weather significantly contributed to the accident.
The SDRF teams are making their way to the location to aid in recovery efforts.
This unfortunate event comes shortly after a June 7 incident, where another helicopter heading to Kedarnath from the Badasu helipad encountered a technical failure mid-air.
That helicopter, carrying five passengers, managed an emergency landing on the Rudraprayag-Gaurikund highway just below the helipad after a malfunction occurred just two meters above ground. Although the tail of the helicopter struck a parked car and the rotor blades damaged a nearby shop, luckily, no pedestrians or vehicles were involved, preventing additional injuries.
The pilot sustained a back injury and was promptly taken to a hospital before being referred to a higher medical facility, while all passengers remained unharmed.
This accident adds to a worrying trend of air tragedies in Uttarakhand's mountainous landscape. Earlier, on May 8, another helicopter crash occurred in Uttarkashi district, where a helicopter flying from the Sahastradhara helipad to Harshil crashed near Gangani on the Gangotri National Highway. Out of the seven people on board, six, including the pilot, lost their lives instantly, while the sole survivor who suffered grave injuries was taken to AIIMS Rishikesh for specialized treatment.
