Shimla, July 3 (NationPress) Rescuers have recommenced their search efforts in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, marking the third day of operations to find 34 individuals who have been unaccounted for following devastating cloudbursts and heavy rainfall that led to significant landslides and flash floods.

The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings of a moderate flash flood risk across Kangra, Mandi, Hamirpur, Shimla, Sirmaur, and Solan districts, expected to last until Friday.

In the midst of relentless rain and obstructed roads, a team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) displayed remarkable bravery by transporting a pregnant woman in a palanquin over long distances to ensure she reached a hospital in the Thunag area of Mandi.

Heavy rainfall on Tuesday resulted in catastrophic flooding, destroying 14 bridges, 148 houses, and two shops, leading to 11 fatalities, predominantly in Mandi district. Concerns grow as the chances of survival for the missing individuals diminish after more than 48 hours since the disaster struck.

According to the HP State Emergency Operation Centre, 157 individuals have been accommodated in five relief camps.

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu visited Syathi village in the Laungani panchayat of Dharampur, Mandi, where he interacted with families affected by the cloudburst, listened to their challenges, shared in their grief, and assessed the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts.

The district administration has provided each household with financial assistance of Rs 1.70 lakh, along with rations, tarpaulins, and other essential relief supplies.

In his discussions with the affected families, the Chief Minister reassured them of the government’s unwavering support and commitment to providing all possible assistance.

Villagers recounted the traumatic experience, sharing how the entire village was suddenly engulfed, leaving them with no space even to set up tents for shelter.

“Many of us narrowly escaped death and witnessed the terrifying event firsthand,” a local resident shared with the Chief Minister.
