Hyderabad, Jan 12 (NationPress) In the lead-up to the Sankranti festival, the Hyderabad Police have escalated their efforts against the illegal use of Chinese manja and confiscated contraband valued at Rs 43 lakh over the past four days.

The authorities are enhancing their enforcement to eliminate the sale, storage, and transport of banned Chinese manja (synthetic/nylon kite string) within the city.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar announced on Monday that this special initiative is being conducted citywide. From January 8 to January 11, police seized 2,150 bobbins valued at Rs 43 lakh.

The Commissioner reported that 29 cases have been registered against offenders, leading to the arrest of 57 individuals involved in the trade.

He cautioned that the banned manja endangers the environment, wildlife, and human lives.

In the previous month, the police documented 132 cases and confiscated 8,376 bobbins worth Rs 1.68 crore, resulting in a total of 200 arrests.

Sajjanar emphasized that imprisonment is unavoidable for anyone caught selling or purchasing the prohibited manja. He urged citizens to use safe threads and enjoy the Sankranti festival responsibly.

“Kites should ascend in the sky, not harm innocent lives! The Chinese manja thread remains intact but can cause severe injuries. Your momentary happiness should not turn into irreparable grief for others. Engaging in the sale or use of banned manja will lead to strict repercussions. Celebrate the festival joyously, not at the cost of lives,” he stated in another post.

Recent incidents involving Chinese manja have left six motorcyclists, including a police officer and a student, with serious neck injuries.

In a recent case, a 33-year-old man sustained a deep cut on his shoulder from Chinese manja while riding a bike in Gachibowli on Sunday.

K. Surya Teja, an employee at a software firm, was injured on the SLN Terminal flyover and was promptly taken to a hospital for treatment.
