Swift Medical Evacuation by Indian Coast Guard Near Gujarat
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Veraval, March 12 (NationPress) In a rapid and well-coordinated search and rescue mission on Thursday, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully evacuated an injured fisherman following a distress signal from a fishing vessel in the Arabian Sea.
The ICG's vessel C-149, based in Veraval, was promptly dispatched after receiving a medical emergency alert from the Indian Fishing Boat (IFB) 'Guru Krupa', which was operating approximately 23 nautical miles off the coast of Gujarat.
The Coast Guard team located the fishing boat and brought the injured fisherman on board for urgent evacuation.
Upon reaching the CG jetty, the individual received immediate first aid and was stabilized by the station's medical officer before being transferred to a nearby government hospital for further care.
Officials remarked, "The prompt response and execution of this mission ensured that the distressed fisherman received critical medical attention. Our teams are dedicated to preserving lives at sea in alignment with our operational protocols and mission statement."
This rescue operation emphasizes the Indian Coast Guard's ongoing maritime vigilance along the western coastline, especially in the heavily trafficked fishing areas off Gujarat.
In a comparable operation last year, the Coast Guard executed two medical evacuation missions off the Gujarat coast on March 23, successfully rescuing two fishermen with serious injuries from separate vessels approximately 100 km offshore near Porbandar and Pipavav.
Two Coast Guard ships, C-409 and C-15, were swiftly deployed following distress calls, ensuring the injured individuals were stabilized and brought ashore for medical assistance.
Earlier in May 2024, the Coast Guard acted on a nighttime distress signal from the Veraval Maritime Rescue Sub-Center when a fisherman aboard a vessel sustained a grave head injury around 130 km off the coast.
The injured crew member was evacuated by ICGS C-153 and taken for medical treatment in Veraval.
These recent operations reaffirm the Coast Guard's commitment to maritime safety and readiness to respond to emergencies at sea, maintaining its long-standing dedication to protecting fishermen and other mariners in peril.
