New Delhi, Nov 25 (NationPress) A political upheaval unfolded on Tuesday when Jagadguru Rambhadracharya advocated for the abolition of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, sparking diverse reactions from leaders across the political landscape. Purnia MP Pappu Yadav remarked, “If all Shankaracharyas embrace Dalits, we will promptly abolish reservation.”
In an interview with IANS, Yadav stated, “I urge the Shankaracharya to welcome Dalits, SC, and STs into their fold, and we will swiftly end reservation.”
Earlier, Jagadguru Rambhadracharya expressed, “The SC/ST Act should be abolished. The Vedas do not recognize Avarnas or Savarnas; these political figures have perpetuated this system… I argue there should be no reservation based on caste.”
His comments reignited discussions surrounding affirmative action and the legal protections afforded to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit sharply critiqued Rambhadracharya’s stance, questioning its practicality.
He commented, “Win a two-thirds majority, come to Parliament, form the government, and amend the laws. Or do you expect PM Modi to heed your call merely because you are part of his circle, allowing you to instruct your ministers to abolish reservation?”
Dikshit’s remarks highlight the political sensitivities entwined with reservation policies and the legal frameworks safeguarding marginalized groups.
Conversely, Minister Lakhendra Kumar Raushan expressed his support for Rambhadracharya’s views, stating, “I endorse Rambhadracharya’s comments. The caste system and societal divisions based on varna have significantly contributed to the weakening of our nation.”
The SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, established in 1989, is a pivotal law designed to prevent atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, creating Special Courts, enforcing stricter penalties, and protecting victims' rights. Proposals for its repeal have historically triggered strong responses from community advocates and political leaders.
Rambhadracharya’s assertion that “there should be no reservation based on caste” has reignited discussions at a time when debates over caste census, social justice policies, and electoral strategies are prevalent in various states, while many regions continue to experience atrocities against Dalits.
