New Delhi, May 17 (NationPress) India is set to demonstrate its advancements in the power and energy sector during the forthcoming BRICS 'Energy Ministers’ Meeting' scheduled for May 19 in Brazil, as announced by the Ministry of Power on Saturday.
Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, is on an official visit to represent India at this significant assembly.
The gathering will revolve around the theme 'Empowering Global South Cooperation for Inclusive and Sustainable Global Governance.'
Energy Ministers from BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—will convene to deliberate on crucial topics such as energy security, accessibility, affordability, and sustainability, according to the ministry.
India aims to leverage this platform to highlight its remarkable achievements over the last decade.
These achievements encompass a 90% increase in power generation capacity, substantial progress in renewable energy, green hydrogen, and biofuels, along with significant advancements in sustainable energy practices.
During the discussions, India will also reiterate its commitment to enhancing energy accessibility and affordability while advancing a clean energy transition.
This international engagement occurs as India has set ambitious nuclear energy targets as well.
In a prior meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Power, the minister revealed plans to elevate nuclear power capacity to 100 GW by 2047 in line with the ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision.
Currently, India operates 25 nuclear reactors with a total installed capacity of 8,880 MW.
Moreover, eight additional reactors with 6,600 MW are under construction, and another 10 reactors (7,000 MW) are in the pre-project phase.
This nuclear power initiative aligns with India’s aspiration to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070, with nuclear energy poised to play a pivotal role in diminishing reliance on fossil fuels and ensuring energy security.
The minister has also stressed that nuclear energy can be utilized beyond electricity generation—for hydrogen production, desalination, process steam, and space heating.
