Budapest (Hungary), July 21 (NationPress) Rising star Sumit clinched the silver medal as India's Greco-Roman wrestling team made a remarkable resurgence on the final day of the 'Polyak Imre & Varga Janos Memorial' – the 4th Ranking Series – held here, by achieving one silver and one bronze medal.
Following a challenging start where none of the Greco-Roman wrestlers progressed to the medal rounds, the concluding day proved to be uplifting, demonstrating the potential and burgeoning strength of India's Greco-Roman squad.
Sumit Secures Silver Medal
The young grappler, who is also the current Under-23 Asian Champion, delivered an outstanding performance in the 60 kg weight class to earn the silver medal.
He began with a bye in the qualification round. In his opening match, he triumphed over Sadyk Lalaev (UWW) with an impressive score of 9-3. In the quarterfinals, Sumit dominated Korean wrestler Dahyun Kim by fall (7-4). Continuing his victorious streak, he outclassed Kazakh wrestler Galym Kabdunassarov by technical superiority (10-1) in the semifinals.
In the gold medal match, Sumit faced Nihat Zahid Mammadli of Azerbaijan, the reigning European and World Champion.
Mammadli encountered some tense moments in the first period, but remained composed, successfully defending against Sumit's attempts. He blocked a gut-wrench mid-turn, earning two points, and initiated the second period with a bodylock, scoring a takedown to lead 4-1.
As Sumit was placed in par terre, Mammadli extended his lead to 5-1. Despite Sumit’s efforts to grapple with Mammadli in the final two minutes, he fell short, with Mammadli securing the victory at 5-1.
Bronze Medal for Anil Mor
Another Greco-Roman wrestler, Anil Mor, who previously secured a silver medal at the Yasar Dogu International Tournament (June 2025), added another achievement by winning a bronze medal in the 55 kg category. After a bye in the qualification round, he faced a setback against Emin Sefershaev (UWW) in his first match, losing 6-1.
With Emin advancing to the final, Anil was granted another chance through the repechage rounds. He dominated Moldova's Atrium Deleanu with a commanding 7-0 victory, not allowing any points. In the bronze medal match, he showcased his skills by defeating Ikhtiyor Botirov of Uzbekistan with a strong 7-4 win, securing India's second medal of the day.
Women Wrestlers Continue to Excel
Just a day prior, the Indian women's wrestling team topped the overall medal standings, surpassing strong competitors like the USA and Hungary, which placed second and third, respectively.
Given their recent consistent performances on the international stage, experts predict that Indian women wrestlers are poised to secure 3–4 medals at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
