Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides on Friday, 22 May formally elevated India-Cyprus bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership during wide-ranging talks at Hyderabad House, New Delhi, with both leaders reaffirming a joint commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms, including cross-border terrorism.
Key Developments from the Summit
The two leaders oversaw the exchange of several bilateral agreements spanning counter-terrorism, maritime security, diplomatic training, innovation, education, and culture. Discussions also ranged across trade and investment, defence and security, maritime and financial connectivity, technology and innovation, mobility, and India–European Union (EU) engagement.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X: 'Building upon India-Cyprus comprehensive and trusted partnership! Prime Minister Narendra Modi held wide-ranging discussions with President Christodoulides of Cyprus in New Delhi today... They also exchanged perspectives on regional and global issues.'
Jaiswal added: 'Both leaders reiterated their commitment in combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including cross-border terrorism. In a significant step, India and Cyprus elevated their bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership.'
Diplomatic Engagements on the Sidelines
External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar also held a separate meeting with President Christodoulides, expressing appreciation for the Cypriot leader's 'positive sentiments and guidance' for bilateral ties and India-EU cooperation. Jaishankar posted on X: 'Delighted to call on President Christodoulides of the Republic of Cyprus in New Delhi today. Value his positive sentiments and guidance for strengthening our bilateral ties and India-EU cooperation.'
Earlier in the day, President Christodoulides paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. A lighter moment preceded the formal summit when both leaders posed for a selfie at Hyderabad House.
Mumbai Leg and NSE Bell-Ringing
Before arriving in New Delhi, Christodoulides visited Mumbai as part of his four-day State Visit to India. On Thursday, he rang the NSE India bell in Mumbai alongside NSE Chairman Srinivas Injeti and NSE MD and CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan. He was received at the New Delhi airport by Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta and accorded a ceremonial welcome with a Guard of Honour.
Historical Context and What Comes Next
The visit builds on the momentum generated by PM Modi's visit to Cyprus in June 2025, described as a historic milestone in bilateral ties. The two countries are set to mark 65 years of diplomatic relations on 10 February 2027. According to the MEA, the visit reflects 'the shared commitment of both sides to further deepen cooperation, including in the wider India-EU context.'
President Christodoulides is also scheduled to call on President Droupadi Murmu, who will host an official banquet in his honour at Rashtrapati Bhavan. With the Strategic Partnership now formalised, both nations are expected to operationalise the signed agreements in the months ahead.
