New Delhi, May 9 (NationPress) In a significant escalation of hostilities between India and Pakistan, Indian forces have successfully downed a Pakistan Air Force F-16 alongside two JF-17 jets, following Pakistan's attempts to strike various sites in Jammu and Punjab, according to government sources.

Earlier on Thursday, Pakistan made efforts to target multiple sites within India; however, Indian air defense systems intercepted and neutralized the intruding drones.

Indian forces also took down Pakistan's Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) within Punjab, which reportedly crashed on the Pakistani side.

Additionally, drone assaults have been thwarted in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur and Rajasthan's Jaisalmer, with one drone being shot down in Akhnoor.

Two Kamikaze drones were also intercepted in Poonch.

Sources indicate that the Indian Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) system successfully shot down the F-16 fighter jet near the Sargodha airbase.

Significantly, the F-16 is a mainstay of Pakistan's air fleet, acquired from the United States, alongside the JF-17, another vital aircraft. The F-16s, produced by Lockheed Martin, were delivered to Pakistan in the late 1980s and have been utilized by the Pakistan Air Force since the Balakot airstrikes in 2019.

Earlier, Pakistan attempted a missile strike in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer region late Thursday, which prompted a rapid response from India's air defense systems.

India's air defense systems in the area have been fully mobilized to intercept and eliminate incoming threats. More than 70 missiles have been successfully intercepted mid-air, averting any damage to ground targets, sources reported.

In a major escalation, Pakistan executed simultaneous attacks on various locations in Jammu, including the airport. Rockets were launched at Jammu from across the International Border on Thursday night.

One drone struck the Jammu Civil Airport, leading to the mobilization of fighter jets. India activated its air defense systems, which effectively intercepted the incoming rockets.

Pakistani forces have also engaged in unprovoked shelling along the Line of Control in Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Samba, and Uri districts of Jammu and Kashmir late Thursday evening.

The S-400 air defense system intercepted eight Pakistani missiles over Jammu airport, Samba, RS Pura, Arnia, and surrounding areas. Two Pakistani drones were brought down near Jammu University.

The Integrated Defence Staff declared, "Military installations in Jammu, Pathankot, and Udhampur near the International Boundary faced attacks from Pakistan using missiles and drones. No casualties. Threat neutralized by #IndianArmedForces in accordance with standard operating procedures employing both kinetic and non-kinetic methods."

This escalation from Pakistan occurred less than 48 hours after India initiated Operation Sindoor targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.
